with a litte bit of delay, miller puckette started his lecture at the iem

at 9 am most of the invited people resembled at the iem. prelimanary the header of the institute, r. höllweg welcomed everybody, and afterwards a short round through the institute was taken. IEM is supporting pd-developments, and trying to get new insigths, -what should be done, and what will be done. Miller Puckette stated two ways of making music : the first one is, to take just on instrument an play on, the other thing is, to compose, ---to compose something on a computer, in this case handled as an instrument, like people used to in the 70-ies and 80-ies.
a lot of fundemental ideas behind MAX, a lot of troubles with MAX,--- one of the problems seems to be learning to compose, to structure and at the same time, to get this sound in time. jazz e.g. is that, what you get, when you don´t have planned anything Differences between memory and real time
a fundamental premise of pd is, that nobody came up with a suitable environment How to practice?- wie ist die handhabe?. Gemäß miller puckette´s ansicht, änderte sich auf kulturellem wege nichts seit 1945. (nothing changed since 1945 in a cultural way) 1948 was the time, when computers stepped into art.- the issue is not to use the computer just for making art, but in a inverted way. (the comparision with pumping gas into a car by computers) computers may be able to help you. there´s a difference between computer music and music. So the questions turns out to ask, what makes it so interessant being a musician right now?
in the lecture now shapes in color appear :rectangels and triangels. the color describes the template. e.g. a triangel with 4 points (it is including the way back) through the shapes you can see data and record live sounds. (a blue line makes sound) the trouble herewith is, that the sound moves away very fast, which is shown in the graphic by a short distance, and the rest of the line may be defined as waste. the connection between color and voice is apparently.
Miller Puckette started working on pd since 1960, -on trouble might also be, that there´s not so much feedback from the users. Finally, as a joke, while presenting a curve made by the "drawing-programm" pd, the hand-made greek letters figured out to be the real curves... --
